Last week, Sam Smith broke the sad news that he would have to cancel a string of Australian tour dates after suffering a vocal cord hemorrhage. While he spent that time resting and recovering, unfortunately, the English singer-songwriter has now revealed in a tweet that he’ll have to undergo surgery:
The surgery means Smith will have to cancel more of his upcoming tour stops and appearances. The “Stay With Me” crooner added that doctors say he will be able to return to performing in six to eight weeks.
Smith was scheduled to play a concert today (May 7) in Tokyo. The singer was also forced to cancel a handful of European dates. Check out the updated list on his website.
Smith originally shared his health issues at the end of the April. “I have been vocally exhausted for a while now however last night in Sydney I had a small hemorrhage on my vocal cords,” he explained in an Instagram post. “The doctors have told me I need to fully rest until my vocal cords have healed, otherwise this could become a huge, long-term issue.”
He added that he will make up the canceled gigs, with plans to announce “re-arranged dates very shortly.”
