2015 has already been a breakout year for The Weeknd with three tracks currently in the Top 25 of the Billboard Hot 100. The album’s first official single “Can’t Feel My Face”currently sits at #6 while previously released tracks “Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey)” and“The Hills” sit at #16 and #23, respectively. “Can’t Feel My Face” continues to remain a fixture in the Top 5 of iTunes Overall Top Songs Chart and it has hit #1 on the iTunes R&B/Soul chart as well as #1 on Shazam USA and Spotify USA chart. “Can’t Feel My Face” is also seeing huge global success with the track debuting Top 5 in over 33 markets including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Denmark and Poland. Written by The Weeknd and co-produced by pop powerhouse Max Martin, it’s no surprise that the track is already being hailed as the best song of 2015 by outlets like USA Today and Radio.com. The official music video to the track will also debut in the coming weeks. You can listen to the track here.
The Weeknd is also seeing success in “The Hills”, another track that will be featured on the album. Released in May, The track currently sits #2 on the iTunes R&B chart and at #4 on the iTunes overall songs and Spotify songs chart, joining “Can’t Feel My Face” in the Top 5 of all three charts. The fiery music video, directed by Grant Singer, accrued over 10 million views in less than a week and has amassed nearly 60 million to date.
The year started out with a bang with “Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey)”, The Weeknd’s contribution and first release from the chart-dominating Fifty Shades of Grey Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The single recently achieved triple platinum status as certified by the RIAA and has spent 27 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. “Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey)” reached #1 on Spotify and was the “#1 Most Shazam’ed Song in the World,” being Shazam’ed over 3 million times and occupying the Top 5 on the music discovery app for five weeks straight. Internationally, the track has also reached Platinum status in Sweden (x2), Netherlands (x2), Norway, Denmark and Canada plus Gold status in the UK, Australia, Mexico, Switzerland, and New Zealand.
A festival showstopper, The Weeknd will headline this year’s Lollapalooza music festival joining the likes of Paul McCartney, Metallica and Florence + the Machine. He capped off a closing set at Coachella 2015 to rave reviews.
The Canadian anonymously uploaded several songs to YouTube under the name “The Weeknd”. He released three nine-track mixtapes throughout 2011: House of Balloons, Thursday and Echoes of Silence. The following year, he released a compilation album Trilogy, consisting of remastered versions of the mixtape material and three additional songs. It was released under Republic Records and his own label XO. In 2013, he released his debut studio album Kiss Land, which was supported by the singles “Kiss Land” and “Live For”. Beauty Behind The Madness will be the third record.
