Festival Preview: JMBLYA 2015 (Dallas, New Braunfels)
Our favorite hip-hop show promoters in Texas, Score More, have outdone themselves with their third annual Jambalaya fest (now simply abbreviated to JMBLYA). Last year’s event in 2014 had a great lineup, and this year’s eclectic mix of hip-hop and edm doesn’t disappoint either. This year’s lineup includes:
A.Dd+ x Blue, The Misfit
Denitia and Sene
Here is what the promoters themselves have to say:
“With Jambalaya the idea is for the fans to expect something that they’ve never experienced before. Our music collections today are not comprised of one genre, they’re a myriad. Jambalaya isn’t about huge field with multiple stages, although big festivals are great. This event is about bringing different “stages” of talent and putting them on back to back. It’s about providing a festival experience in an intimate setting. 6 years ago we booked an event that featured Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Steve Aoki, Big Sean, Bun B, ScHoolBoy Q, Chiddy Bang, and had special guest sets by Skrillex and Wiz Khalifa. We were early in projecting the careers on that lineup and, as we all know, this lineup would now be capable of selling out arenas. That’s what we’re here to do with Jambalaya. This is a 8 hour event with the best mixture of hip-hop and dance music we could assemble.”
This year’s one day festival once again takes place in both Dallas and New Braunfels, on Friday, June 19th and Saturday, June 20th, 2015. don’t miss out! Score tickets here while they last, both previous years’ events sold out.
The first fest in 2013 included Tyler The Creator and Earl Sweatshirt, Zeds Dead, Big Boi, RL Grime and G-Eazy (you can see our review here) while last year’s in 2014 included Chance The Rapper, Baauer X RL Grime, A$AP Ferg, Griz, RiFF RAFF, Cashmere Cat, The Underachievers and Denzel Curry (you can see our review here).
Below you will find more detailed information about the artists who will be performing, including photos, videos, bios, related artist recommendations, Spotify playist and more!

From selling his mixtapes out of a backpack to selling out headline tours across the globe, Oakland, California rapper G-Eazy knows what it means to be “Almost Famous.” Yet with the release of his latest album These Things Happen, which has sold 130,000 copies to date, the charismatic producer/emcee has landed an album atop the Billboard Hip-Hop/R&B and Top Rap Albums Charts and made his late night TV debut as his fame continues to grow. With accolades from The New York Times, USA Today, Rolling Stone, Billboard and more, G-Eazy’s goal remains the same.
Rapper G-Eazy has an agenda. Born in Haiti and raised in the city of Montreal, Canadian artist Kaytranada has experienced an explosive rise in the past couple of years with his irresistible production and live sets, but the hard work and success did not happen over night. Before touring the globe and amassing millions of hits online with his series of beloved tracks and mixes, the young man came up as a true disciple, absorbing hip hop and RnB culture since his childhood and finding ways to make the music his own.
Since the age of fourteen, when he first began to DJ and the following year when his brother introduced him to music production software, his output has been relentless. As he explains, “after he showed me the basics, from that day on I couldn’t stop making beats,” pumping out a beat a day for the next couple of years and soon after self-releasing a series of EPs and beat tapes that quickly began to expand his reach. Official releases on HW&W and Jakarta Records soon spread his name like wildfire and some instant-classic remixes by the likes of Missy Elliot, Janet Jackson, TLC, Danny Brown and others have cemented his reputation and his sound; an undeniable swing of the drums comparable to Dilla’s, a signature soulful touch in the melodies, and a healthy dose of funky bass lines.
In the past year, he was approached by Brodinski to drop the single “Free Things In Life” on the hotly-tipped French label Bromance, has headlined tours in Europe, Australia and North America, and released his newest single and video “At All” which has already conquered dance floors worldwide and introduced his face to the world with an unforgettable video. Now, as he continues to bridge the gap between the dance world and hip hop/RnB, he is prepping a solo album for 2015 and a series of high profile collaborations that will confirm his position as one of the most important producers in today’s musical landscape.

At the age of 21, Vic Mensa has already established himself as an integral part of Chicago culture, first co-founding the SAVEMONEY collective and releasing two mixtapes in two years and now as a solo artist signed with the Roc Nation family. His debut mixtape Straight Up in 2010, followed by 2013’s INNANETAPE, brought Mensa’s solo work to a new and larger audience. In addition, The Chicago native’s critically acclaimed 2nd project helped earn him a top spot on XXL Magazine’s 2014 freshman class.
After closing out 2013 with U.S. dates on the J. Cole and Wale “What Dreams May Come” tour and a European tour with Danny Brown, Mensa released his biggest single to date; 2014’s “Down On My Luck.” In 2014 he also toured as the opening support for Disclosure (see our live show review here). In 2015, Vic Mensa will release new music and thus far has collaborated with Kanye West and Sia on “Wolves” – the first track on Kanye West’s upcoming album So Help Me God. Vic Mensa’s live performances to date include Wireless Festival, The Governors Ball Festival, the Emmy Award-winning comedy show Saturday Night Live and the 2015 Coachella Valley Music and Arts festival. We placed him in our list of picks for The Top 20 Most Underrated Artists Of Coachella 2015 (see here).
Now part of the Roc Nation Records family, you can get Vic’s new single, “U Mad” feat. Kanye West, at all digital retailers.

The ZOMBiES have had a steady output of tracks themselves in the past few months including “Belly”, “My Team Supreme”, and “Red Light, Green Light”. These shows will bring the two groups together as luminaries in the new hip hop underground.
Shocking, hilarious, sometimes revolting, and yet completely endearing, the New York hip-hop trio Flatbush ZOMBiES are a genuine mystery in a musical landscape where few still exist. Meechy Darko and Juice, Brooklyn bred youth with a penchant for gold grills, Charles Manson and dropping acid, make up the high energy trio alongside producer and lifelong friend Erick Arc Elliott. The Zombies rose out of complete obscurity on the back of a synth heavy, weed laced banger entitled “Thug Waffle,” an ode to marijuana and breakfast foods which immediately propelled them to the forefront of New York’s fresh crop of talent. Their seamless recipe of can’t-look-away visual appeal and deft lyricism had them opening for Slaughterhouse and ScHoolBoy Q within a month while peaking the interest of everyone from Lana Del Rey to VICE, and garnering them a show stealing guest spot on the first A$AP Rocky single, “Bath Salt.” Their first full length mixtape, D.R.U.G.S. (July 2012), released with over 50,000 downloads in the first week and provides the backbone for their hypnotically abrasive and off the wall live show.
Their next mixtape was called Better Off Dead, and came out in 2013. They have collaborated with both A$AP Rocky and Danny Brown, and toured in 2013 with Joey Bada$$. They also performed at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin last year in 2013, and we placed them in our list of picks for The Top 20 Most Underrated Artists Of Coachella 2014 (see here).

Towkio is an integral and quickly rising member of Chicago’s rambunctious and diverse SaveMoney collective. Easily recognized as the most outlandish one of an already eclectic group, which counts genre-bending acts like Chance the Rapper and Vic Mensa amongst its ranks, Towkio creates music that is at once sonically pleasing and foot-movingly up-tempo. His signature style is found within his music’s production: eclectic, unconventional and characterized by a hallucinatory, genre-blending sound that sits at the intersection of dance and hip-hop. By rapping over emotion-provoking production and layering his unique vocals on top of it all, Towkio’s sound is a progressive one that plays off the collective’s mission by creating yet another fresh take on rap within Chicago’s recent hip-hop renaissance. A veteran of the local music scene, Towkio has incubated his aesthetic in Chicago for some time and recently sold out Lincoln Hall with a live show that packs energy and bars into a fully-fledged performance that leaves fans new and old wanting more. The 21-year-old recently released his full-length tape, .Wav Theory, in April of 2015.
.Wav Theory is a concept album revolving the idea that energies travel in waves. These waves are invisible yet tangible and surround us at all times. Each song is focused on sound, breaking down the barrier of language to transmit a message or emotion. .Wav Theory is an introduction to a way of living, coexisting in both realities. First teased by the release of the lead single “Involved”.

Jayson Jenkins, better known as Mick Jenkins (his stage name), is an American hip-hop recording artist born in Huntsville, Alabama on April 16th, 1991. He was then raised on the south side of Chicago, Illinois. He is a member of Free Nation, a hip-hop group that promotes creative thought without accepting narrow views imposed by the powers that be. This group believes that when you find a way to combat the status quo, you are free.
In the spring of 2013 Mick released a mixtape entitled Trees and Truths. It quickly became a local favorite, buoyed by acid jazz-influenced production, biblical allegory and lacerating lyricism. The project was by far his most lyrical body of work and caught the attention of Chicago’s incipient gatekeepers. A few months after its release, a collaboration with Chance The Rapper and Vic Mensa came in the form of a single entitled “Crossroads”, which was a summer hit.
In recent months, Mick has been receiving a lot of attention after the release of his single/ Visual “Martyrs”. This song juxtaposes harsh truths about our society with a catchy hook, creating a thought-provoking single with various underlying messages and subtle notions. “Martyrs” has led people such as Timberland, among others, to reach out and praise Jenkins for his musical talent and intricate lyricism. Mick continues to find creative ways to convey his message and on August 12 released his highly anticipated project The Water[s] which has garnered national attention. Centered around the idea of comparing water to life’s truths, The Water[s] serves as Jenkins’ breakout project and is receiving critical acclaim. In November of 2014 Jenkins toured on The Smoker’s Club Worldwide Rollers tour with Method Man, Redman, B-Real, and Berner. In February of 2015, he headlined his first national tour with Pro Era’s Kirk Knight, selling out almost half the shows on tour. Jenkins later joined Joey Bada$$ for Phase 1 of his World Domination Tour in June. After wrapping up the summer tour, Jenkins is now turning his attention to his upcoming EP titled Waves.

To call GoldLink an aspiring rapper would not do him justice. The DMV-bred emcee captured the attention of an entire industry with the first project he ever released.
GoldLink’s sound doesn’t throw it all the way back to the boom-bap, New York style, nor is it entirely a product of digital production. Instead, the music mixes the buttery grooves of 90’s R&B with classic hip-hop breaks to give it an essence of nostalgia, and then turns on its head with bouncy, forward-thinking production style led by the likes of Ta-Ku and Kaytranda. Add that to GoldLink’s ability to fill every pocket of the dynamic instrumentals he tackles with a roller-coaster delivery, and suddenly your head is bobbing to the self-proclaimed “future-bounce” genre.
The racing mind of a 20-year old is usually not a romantically stable place, so you will often hear GoldLink battling the worries and woes of his love life. However, with the mental and social acuity of someone far beyond his years, it is not out of the ordinary to find GoldLink tackling a larger social injustice. Whether it be dealing cocaine, gun-toting friends, an absent father, or the general hardship of growing up in the ghetto, there is substance behind the sound.
With a catalog of less than twenty songs under his belt, GoldLink has still been able to receive the support of outlets like FADER, Complex, Noisey, and XXL. The recognition spread further than the web though, as GoldLink played several showcases at SXSW, a Los Angeles debut alongside future-bounce Soulection conglomerates, as well as numerous other concerts in New York and elsewhere on the horizon, including a VIP performance at the Buku Festival in New Orleans. He is a member of the XXL Freshmen Class Of 2015.
The short career of GoldLink thus far has shown him relative success, and with a summer filled with new music right around the corner, we are all excited to watch, experience, and dance to his progression.

It’s safe to say that New Jersey, and specifically Newark, has not been shown in the best light in the public eye. With extremely high crime, murder and unemployment rates, NADUS seems to bring light and a positive message from within a city fighting to rise above this stigma. 22-year-old Nadus Bright, Jr is a true cultural product of his city. He’s used the negative surroundings of his upbringing to shed a positivity light from his neighborhood to global appeal.
The THREAD co-founder, Jersey Club and future bass pioneer, was co-signed as a Brick Bandits member at the young age of 15. With support from G’s like Diplo, Dirty South Joe, Sliink, Tim Dolla, it’s time for NADUS’ story of life, music, and triumph to shine Bright.

At a time when the idea of “alternative R&B” has become the genre-defying norm, when hip hop and EDM and house music and indie-rock have all started to sound mysteriously the same, the chilled-out, futuristic soul vibes of Brooklyn electro pop duo Denitia and Sene make a perfect kind of sense. Formed in 2011, the Brooklyn-based group has released one full-length (2013’s His and Hers), a handful of singles, and two EPs (2012’s Blah Blah Blah and 2014’s side fx)—all of which show off the band’s ability to move seamlessly between pure pop, subdued electronica, and slinky R&B with a sound that brings to mind everything from Massive Attack, The Fugees, or the shadowy late-night atmospherics of The XX. The pairing of powerhouse vocalist Denitia and production whiz and beat-maker Sene is a kind of perfect musical union—a complimentary collision of personalities and musical sensibilities that makes for next level perfect pop.

The Cowboys, the Grassy Knoll, J.R. Ewing, the Stanky Leg– Dallas, Texas, is known for lots of things. Progressive, forward-thinking hip-hop has, until now, not been one of them. Quirky yet streetwise, fun-loving yet dead serious, A.Dd+ (pronounced aye-dee-dee)., the duo of Paris Pershun and Slim Gravy, may just be leading the city towards a rap renaissance. With a recipe that falls somewhere between UGK’s downhome Southern cooking and the abstract vibes of the Native Tongues movement, Paris (a.k.a. Arrias Walls) and Slim (Dionte Rembert) been labeled the OutKast of Dallas. As Paris states on “The Rapper & The Poet”, the lead track from A.Dd+’s debut LP, When Pigs Fly, the group strives to offer listeners a double dose of reality mixed with tragedy mixed with immortality.
The Red Bull Soundstage artists have already been featured in Spin Magazine, Pitchfork, and The Fader. They were one of Spin Magazine’s 5 Best New Artists For May 2012. They have performed at the A3C hip-hop festival, SXSW, Gorilla Vs. Bear Fest, Index Fest, Jambalaya Fest, and 35 Denton Fest, as well as also providing opening support for Black Milk, ScHoolBoy Q, Main Attrakionz, The Wu-Tang Clan, Flatbush ZOMBiES, Champagne Champagne, and Talib Kweli. Poised to break out of local/regional Dallas music scene, they released their full length DIVEHIFLYLO in 2013, followed by their EP Nawf in 2014.
The A.Dd+ story began in 2000 when Memphis-born Paris moved into the same North Dallas apartment complex as Slim. After years of rhyming together, the pair made their partnership official in 2007, dubbing themselves A.Dd+, a play on their first names, as well as attention deficit disorder, the most ubiquitous of youth behavioral problems. “A.Dd+ is whatever you want it to be,” explains Slim, who is also known as “D.D.” “It has many meanings like A Dynamic Duo, Analog and Digital, Always Doing Dirt. The plus sign symbolizes us being beyond what others are on, always adding to the craft, never subtracting. It’s all about imagination and creativity.”
In 2009, Paris and Slim dropped their debut mixtape, Power of the Tongue. The release earned them local acclaim and a “Best Rap Act” nomination from the Dallas Observer. Just as crucially, it led to their partnership with producer PICNICTYME (of Erykah Badu’s Cannabinoids crew), the group’s sonic sensei and unofficial third member.
Produced entirely by PICNICTYME, their debut LP, When Pigs Fly, took listeners on a ride through the streets of Dallas and a journey through Paris and Slim’s own offbeat imaginations. Upon its release in March of 2011, the Dallas Observer boldly proclaimed it as possibly “the best hip-hop album Dallas has ever released.” The project earned the crew three nods from the Dallas Observer Music Awards, including nominations for “Best Album,” “Best Rap Act,” and “Best Producer.” Renowned hip-hop journalist Jefferson Mao also featured the LP in his XXL “Chairman’s Choice” column, while Pitchfork Media included it in its list of Underrated Rap Releases of 2011.
“It’s overwhelming at times to be held in such high regard,” Paris says of the response to When Pigs Fly. “We approached the project as more of a mixtape with original production by Picnic, and it really took on a life of its own once it hit the public. Having it described as possibly the best rap album ever released in a city that has so much talent, is a great honor.”
Backed by their DJ Sober, (named Dallas’ Best DJ in the Dallas Observer’s “Best Of 2011″), A.Dd+ delivered “blazing opening sets” for sold-out audiences to see Wu-Tang, Erykah Badu, Big K.R.I.T. and Devin the Dude in 2011. The duo kicked off 2012 touring Texas on Red Bull’s Skooled tour with Bun B, Mannie Fresh and Paul Wall, among others. Shortly after, they embarked on their first North American tour with Black Milk (with whom they collaborated on the track “Insomniac Dreaming”) and his band Nat Turner. This Summer, they opened the sold-out Gorilla vs Bear II Festival in Dallas, TX – the only hip-hop group on the bill. The duo looks forward to continuing the 2012 festival season with performances at A3C in Atlanta, GA; CMJ in New York, NY; and FunFunFun Fest in Austin, TX.
Perhaps most encouragingly, A.Dd+’s success has come by pushing forward a sound that is thoroughly representative of Dallas, while at the same time completely different from anything that has previously been heard from the city.
“We are not ‘backpack rappers’; we are not hipsters,” Paris says, of misconceptions about the group. “Some folks take our sense of expression the wrong way ’cause we dress a certain way, or ‘cause our artwork and videos have a certain aesthetic, or ‘cause we express our thoughts over all types of canvases. Once people give our music a full listen or see us perform, that perception usually changes. We don’t make ‘fad’ music. We make music from the soul, and we kill shit.”
We placed them in our list of picks for The 50 Best Bets Of SXSW 2015 (see here).
“ADd+ admit that they’re not stars, but they probably should be. This is the sound of two dudes rapping for people to take notice. And you should.” – – Jeff Weiss
On their focused debut, Dallas’ Paris Pershun and Slim Gravy of A.Dd+ are the rapper and the poet, the spawn of UGK and OutKast, combining street and cerebral. – Pitchfork
When Pigs Fly might be the best hip-hop album Dallas has ever released. – Dallas Observer
Blue, The Misfit
For Fans Of: Curren$y, Snow tha Product, Big K.R.I.T., Ab-Soul, Freddie Gibbs, Vince Staples
Los Angeles born & Dallas raised, the experimental producer and cultivating lyricist, Brandon “Brain Gang” Blue started his musical voyage in 2004. Running with the torch that has passed on by his influences (which range from Timbaland & The Neptunes to Danger Mouse & The Gorillaz), Blue has always felt like his time is now as the music industries next innovative producer-artist combo.
Blue, The Misfit is well known for his extensive production work with national hip-hop artists such as Kendrick Lamar (P&P, P&P 1.5, & Faith), Mac Miller (Down The Rabbit Hole), ScHoolBoy Q, Ab-Soul and Dorrough Music. And he’s also praised as one of Dallas’ best producers based off the work he put together as half of the groundbreaking duo known as Sore Losers in ’09-’10 (Free Loaders, Get A Life).
As a producer, Blue prides himself on evolving and progressing as a musician. Though most of his success is in the Hip-Hop genre, he has an everlasting love for adding all forms of music into his own, especially those of the electronic nature. You can easily hear a trance arranged synthesizer here, an alternative rock sequence there, Texas “screw” style vocals in the backgrounds, and dub step wobble baselines behind it all. He simply calls his approach “experimental”, because he won’t limit himself to toying around with one genre.
As an artist, Blue takes a different approach to rap than your average hip-hop artist. He looks at rap as a form of self expression to share his artistic side which takes you on a journey with well thought out concepts and stories of his life experiences rather than to “out rap” everyone in the industry with metaphors and punch-lines.
Looking to expose this new sound to a larger audience, Blue released an EP entitled Numb. at the end of 2011 and it was well received amongst the public. Numb. held a huge internet presence on hip-hop blogs (2DopeBoyz, OnSmash, Pigeons & Planes, Sneak Hype, & More), proving that there is a lane for something as unique and different as Blue’s vision.
An experiment of dark sounds with bold beats. There will be nothing soft about these records… The bass will beat up speakers, the sounds will weird out your gramdma.
He creates sounds that are more unique than any other then raps on them. Simple, right?
We placed him in our list of picks for The Top 20 Most Underrated Artists Of Fun Fun Fun Fest 2014 (see here).

Metro Boomin’s name has been booming in the streets over the past few months however his production credits extend back to 2010 when he was a high school sophomore. The 19 year-old St. Louis native and current Atlanta resident ironically and technically cant kick it at the clubs that spin his hits, which continue to skyrocket up the charts like Future’s “Karate Chop”. However he isnt preoccupied with partying at the moment being that he plans on having a long and illustrious career like his iconic influences Jermaine Dupri and Dr. Dre. In fact, the way Metro sees it, he will have plenty of time to turn up but for now making beats is his entertainment outlet. And if his track record serves as a forecast of whats to come, his future is looking blindingly bright.
Metro’s skills can be heard on the new Ludacris single “Raised in the South” featuring Young Jeezy from the upcoming album “Ludaversal”. His successful work history with Future has spawned a tight-knit relationship that has parlayed into additional placements on the astronaut’s sophomore disc that will include Future’s latest hit “Honest” (co-produced with DJ Spinz). Metro also worked on Ace Hood’s most recent album Trials and Tribulations where he produced “Disloyal” and co-produced “Pray for Me”. In addition to that, Metro produced “Another Country by Epic recording artist Cash Out feat. Future.
